Anatomy: The Foundation of Medical Science

Anatomy is the study of the human body’s structure and a cornerstone of medical education. The term is derived from the Greek  word anatome, meaning “cutting up,” as it originally involved the dissection of cadavers to understand the arrangement of body structures.

The field includes Gross Anatomy, studied regionally or systemically; Clinical Anatomy, which applies anatomical knowledge to diagnosis and treatment; Histology and Cytology, focusing on tissues and cells; and Embryology, which examines prenatal development. Genetics plays a crucial role in understanding hereditary conditions, congenital anomalies, and advances in gene therapy. Comparative Anatomy and Physical Anthropology provide evolutionary insights.

As Andreas Vesalius stated, “Anatomy is the firm foundation of medicine.” By integrating classical dissection with modern imaging, molecular biology, and genetic advancements, our institution ensures a comprehensive understanding of anatomy, laying the foundation for future medical professionals.
